The Murder Complex by Lindsay Cummings ~ Blitz & First Chapter

Today we are revealing chapter one from THE MURDER COMPLEX by Lindsay Cummings. For a very limited time, you can get THE MURDER COMPLEX ebook for just $1.99!

BOOK SUMMARY:

An action- packed, blood-soaked, futuristic debut thriller set in a world where the murder rate is higher than the birthrate. For fans of Moira Young’s Dust Lands series, La Femme Nikita, and the movie Hanna. Meadow Woodson, a fifteen-year-old girl who has been trained by her father to fight, to kill, and to survive in any situation, lives with her family on a houseboat in Florida. The state is controlled by The Murder Complex, an organization that tracks the population with precision. The plot starts to thicken when Meadow meets Zephyr James, who is—although he doesn’t know it—one of the MC’s programmed assassins. Is their meeting a coincidence? Destiny? Or part of a terrifying strategy? And will Zephyr keep Meadow from discovering the haunting truth about her family? Action-packed, blood-soaked, and chilling, this is a dark and compelling debut novel by Lindsay Cummings.

Chapter One

MEADOW

It is the key to survival, the key to life. My father’s old dagger. “Peri!” I call out over the waves to my little sister. An old can bobs up and down in the water, mesmerizing me for a moment. Beyond the Shallows, the sea is packed with boats. Some of them are still afloat, with their masts stretching like arms to the sky. Others are half-submerged, shipwrecked and covered with moss. Among the boats are other things. Old tires, half of a rusted car, plastic. A body lies facedown in the waves, her hair spread out like seaweed. Behind me, in the city, the Night Siren wails. It starts low, then whoops higher and back down again. Everyone on the beach hurries into the shadows, knowing all too well what happens when the sun goes down. It isn’t safe anymore. I call out to Peri again. “It’s time to go!” She holds up a tiny hand and gives me the signal: two grubby little fingers held high above her head. Two minutes. It is always two more minutes with her. The sun is sinking, a massive orange ball melting into the sea. It sets fire to the sky, and everything is dancing in colors. Reds, oranges, yellows. It reminds me of blood, it reminds me of my mother. Peri comes running up to me, kicking a spray of sand behind her. “I found a periwinkle!” she squeaks, sounding like a startled seagull. “Like me!” “Yeah? Let’s see it.” I cast a glance over my shoulder, at the few people who still litter the beach, before kneeling down to her level. Peri’s big gray eyes, the color of sea foam, widen as she places the tiny shell in my outstretched palm. It’s twisty and fat, with a sharp point at the top. A mollusk sticks out. Though it has barely enough meat for anyone to eat, I’m still tempted to shove it into my pocket. But somehow the Initiative would find out. As sure as the tide comes and goes, the Initiative will always discover our secrets. “It’s a good one,” I say, smiling down at her. “But we can’t keep it.” The thick black numbers tattooed onto her forehead crease in frustration. 72050. Peri’s Catalogue Number, just one number different from mine. Our barcodes show the Initiative where we are, who we are, every moment of our lives. As Peri grows, it will grow, and it will never fade or wrinkle because of the healing nanites we all have in our blood. “Tell you what.” I point the tip of my dagger toward the shell. “We’ll mark it. That way, next time you find it, you’ll remember.” I etch a small heart into the side of the shell. It’s crooked, and hardly legible. I drop the mollusk on the sand, let the waves take it away. Peri smiles triumphantly. She’s a miniature version of me. Silver hair that hangs in loose curls to her waist. Like our mother’s. “Okay, time to go.” She grabs my hand and tows me along the sand, humming the tune to an old lullaby under her breath. Soft, so no one but the two of us can hear it. Peri knows the value of silence in the Shallows. At the far end of the beach, a jetty of large rocks juts out into the ocean. Waves crash on the rocks, and we get soaked, but it doesn’t matter. The heat of the summer clings to me like fog. Peri goes first, clambering on hands and feet up the jetty and over to the other side. I climb down after her and my breath catches in my throat. Pirates. They’ll do anything for extra Creds. The Initiative pays them to guard the shore and take care of minor problems, as well as find and report the citizens who break the four Commandments of the Shallows. Commandment One: Honor the Initiative. Commandment Two: Thou shalt not attempt to cross the Perimeter. Commandment Three: Honor the Silent Hour. Commandment Four: Thou shalt not harbor useful items from the days Before. “Pay up,” one of the Pirates says. He stands from his spot by a blazing campfire. They are cooking fish. We could never afford an entire fish. Whatever we gather is sent to the Rations Department, and mixed and pureed with other nutrient-rich foods for distribution. “We don’t want any trouble tonight,” I say. I press Peri closer to my side. “We just want to get to our boat.” The Pirate laughs, and the two men with him join in. They are all covered in tattoos. One of them has an Initiative tattoo—an open, unblinking eye—on his neck, just below his chin. “You want to go to sea, little girl, you gotta pay.” My hand finds the dagger on my thigh. There are only three of them. If I were alone, I could end this at once. But Peri tugs on my shirt, and I see the fear in her eyes. I cannot risk her safety. Not now, when the Dark Time is so close. And I have nothing to give the Pirates, nothing to buy us passage. But Peri does. She wears a pair of too-large tennis shoes, and the laces are still intact. Something like that is precious, and it kills me that I will be the one to take them from her. “I’ll give you the laces,” I tell the Pirates, pointing at Peri’s feet. “Then you’ll let us go.” The largest man lets out a whistle. His breath is rotten. “I’m feeling generous tonight, little girl. Next time, you better come prepared. Understood?” I nod my head. “Next time you might not get away with your life.” He thinks it’s a joke. I stoop to untie the laces. Peri frowns, but does not cry. She’s strong, my little sister. The Pirates snatch the laces and go back to their fish, laughing. Peri and I pass safely and run down the beach. We yank the palm fronds and seaweed from our boat. It is a tiny dinghy, large enough for only two people. I quickly untie the line, push the boat into the waves, and we leave the shore behind. “Meadow? Will we eat tonight?” Peri asks me as I row, weaving through the maze of waste and litter. The wind blows her hair back from her face, and I notice how her cheekbones stick out, how her eyes are slightly sunken. She’s losing more weight. “Yes.” I nod, looking away. The way she’s studying me, as if I am the only thing in the world worth loving, makes my heart fill with guilt. If she only knew what I do to make sure she can eat. To make sure that all of us survive. Two miles from shore, I stop and stare out at the black sea, feeling my shoulders burn from the effort of rowing. The dinghy bumps up against our houseboat. It is quiet here, a still night, the waves lapping the boat, the same way they always have. When my mother was murdered, I thought the world would end with her. But it goes on.

Title: A COLD LEGACY
Author: Megan Shepherd
Pub. Date: January 27, 2015
Publisher: Balzer+Bray/HarperCollins
Pages: 400

After killing the men who tried to steal her father’s research, Juliet—along with Montgomery, Lucy, Balthazar, and a deathly ill Edward—has escaped to a remote estate on the Scottish moors. Owned by the enigmatic Elizabeth von Stein, the mansion is full of mysteries and unexplained oddities: dead bodies in the basement, secret passages, and fortune-tellers who seem to know Juliet’s secrets. Though it appears to be a safe haven, Juliet fears new dangers may be present within the manor’s own walls.

Then Juliet uncovers the truth about the manor’s long history of scientific experimentation—and her own intended role in it—forcing her to determine where the line falls between right and wrong, life and death, magic and science, and promises and secrets. And she must decide if she’ll follow her father’s dark footsteps or her mother’s tragic ones, or whether she’ll make her own.

With inspiration from Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, this breathless conclusion to the Madman’s Daughter trilogy is about the things we’ll sacrifice to save those we love—even our own humanity.

A COLD LEGACY excerpt
p.21-24

Montgomery stopped the horses outside a tavern. He came to the carriage door, opening it just a crack to keep the rain from drenching us. “I’m going to ask directions. We can’t be far now.”

We watched him saunter over the muddy street as though he didn’t even feel the bite of freezing rain. A face appeared in the tavern window. The door opened and he spoke to a woman in a wool dress for a few moments, then stomped back through the mud. “This village is called Quick,” he told us. “The manor’s only five miles from here.”

“Did you hear that?” Lucy murmured to Edward, still stroking his hair. “We’re almost there. Just hold on. Everything will be all right once we arrive.”

Montgomery’s eyes shifted to me. Neither of us wanted to remind Lucy that the prospect of Edward’s fever breaking—and the Beast’s reappearance—was almost more frightening than the fever itself. Delirious, he was less of a threat.

“Let’s go then,” I whispered to Montgomery. “And quickly.”

He closed the door and in another moment we were moving again, passing through the rest of Quick. Then all too soon the village was nothing but fading lights. The storm grew and the road became rougher, and all the while Edward’s eyes rolled back and forth beneath shuttered lids.

Thunder struck close by, and Lucy shrieked. Montgomery whipped the horses harder, pulling us along the uneven road impossibly fast, trying to outrun the storm. I twisted in the seat to look out the back window at the pelting rain. A stone fence ran alongside us.

“We must be getting close,” I said.

“Not soon enough,” Lucy breathed. “We’re going to crash if he keeps driving like this!”

The road widened, straightening, letting us travel even faster. Lightning struck close by, blinding me. The horses bolted. Lucy screamed and covered her eyes, but I couldn’t tear mine away. The lightning had struck an enormous oak tree, twisted from centuries of wind. The oak took flame, blazing despite the rain. A smoking gash ran down the trunk—the lightning’s death mark. I watched until the rain put out most of the flames, but it still smoldered, billowing hot ash into the night.

The horses pawed the earth, and I grabbed the window to steady myself. At this wild speed, just hitting a single rock at the wrong angle would send the carriage shattering to the ground. It was madness to go so fast. Couldn’t Montgomery calm the horses?

Just when I feared the carriage would careen out of control, it stopped short, throwing me against the opposite wall. I tangled in Lucy’s limbs as the chains around Edward’s body clinked. Balthazar grunted, jerking awake at last. We scrambled in the bottom of the carriage until the door flew open.
Montgomery stood in the pelting rain. I feared he’d say we’d broken another strut or the horses had gone lame or we’d have to spend the night in the harsh storm.

But then I saw the lights behind him, and the night took shape into a turreted stone manor with bright lamps blazing and gargoyles on the roof vomiting rain into a stone courtyard.

Montgomery’s eyes met mine beneath the low brim of his hat.

“We’ve arrived,” he said.

About Megan:

Hello!

I’ve been many things, like a professional exchange student, park ranger in Montana, and LOST enthusiast, but what I am now is a writer.

I think it’s fair to say I was born into it. I grew up in the mountains of North Carolina, raised behind the counter of my parents’ independent bookstore, Highland Books in Brevard. Ah, so many free books. But I never thought being a writer could be a real career. After college I thought I’d end up as a foreign service officer somewhere dashing and exotic, like Canada. I studied French, Spanish, German, and Russian and still speak a few of those. Then I joined the Peace Corps and spent two years in Senegal, where I learned a few more languages I’ll never speak again and lived in a mud hut with no electricity or running water. You can probably imagine how that experience went, but if you’re curious, here are the dirty details

It wasn't until a chance aquaintance read something I wrote and said, "have you ever considered being a writer?" that something clicked and I realized it was possible. My husband encouraged me, and I quickly fell head-over-heels in love with writing and children's literature in particular. I started out writing articles, which have appeared in Faces, Appleseeds, and Calliope magazines, and stories for younger children. I soon realized I wasn’t sweet enough to write fiction for that age and found myself writing young adult literature instead, which doesn’t require nearly as many tender moments and includes a lot more cursing.

When I'm not writing, I can usually be found horseback riding, day dreaming at coffee shops, or hiking in the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina. I love to hear from readers, so please drop me a line!

I am represented by Josh Adams of Adams Literary.

YA Wednesday! Review~ The Young Elites by Marie Lu

Adelina Amouteru is a survivor of the blood fever. A decade ago, the deadly illness swept through her nation. Most of the infected perished, while many of the children who survived were left with strange markings. Adelina’s black hair turned silver, her lashes went pale, and now she has only a jagged scar where her left eye once was. Her cruel father believes she is a malfetto, an abomination, ruining their family’s good name and standing in the way of their fortune. But some of the fever’s survivors are rumored to possess more than just scars—they are believed to have mysterious and powerful gifts, and though their identities remain secret, they have come to be called the Young Elites.
Teren Santoro works for the king. As Leader of the Inquisition Axis, it is his job to seek out the Young Elites, to destroy them before they destroy the nation. He believes the Young Elites to be dangerous and vengeful, but it’s Teren who may possess the darkest secret of all.

Enzo Valenciano is a member of the Dagger Society. This secret sect of Young Elites seeks out others like them before the Inquisition Axis can. But when the Daggers find Adelina, they discover someone with powers like they’ve never seen.

Adelina wants to believe Enzo is on her side, and that Teren is the true enemy. But the lives of these three will collide in unexpected ways, as each fights a very different and personal battle. But of one thing they are all certain: Adelina has abilities that shouldn’t belong in this world. A vengeful blackness in her heart. And a desire to destroy all who dare to cross her.

It is my turn to use. My turn to hurt.

I fell in love with Marie Lu's writing when I read her Legend Series. It's a great dystopian read and I loved that her characters were a little younger and it went on for a few years. In a genre that can be inundated with similarity Lu has her voice and style. So I was super excited when I heard she was working on a new series about an elite group with unusual abilities. This was definitely my most enjoyable read of 2014 and something that I wanted to share on the blog.

This is a darker read and takes place in a darker world. A virus has come to the city called blood fever (it reminds me of scarlet fever, similar symptoms). The fever has killed thousands. Those that do survive are forever scarred and marked. The survivors are called "malfetto's". They may have survived the fever but they have paid the price. Scars and marks cover some or all of their bodies. They also came back with powers. Some with the power to save and some with the power to kill.

They became known as "The Young Elites" and those in the royal family and who obey the royals have decided that they should be hunted down and killed. They are feared and hunted and so they must live in the shadows of the city.

Adelina a survivor of the fever is our narrator. When she came back from the fever she came back missing one of her eyes and with an ability to unleash the ability of illusion. However, she has no idea how to control it. When her power kills she is hunted and captured and brought to the city square to burn at the stake. However, the elites help her escape and take her in. There she meets a number of other Elites all unique in power. Enzo Valenciano (Oh, hot damn, this is my MAN) should be king but the fever robbed him of his birth right and now he fills his days training and fighting as the leader of the Elites. He offers to help train Adelina and help her learn how to control and use her power.

Along the way there are plans by Teren, the leader of the Inquisition Axis and Queen's head man in charge of ridding the world of Elites. War ensues between Teren's group and the Elites.

This first book is gearing up for an action packed series. I will say I was so sad at how book one ended. I am really hoping that we are all being tricked and we will get back what we lost. For such an action and dark book it also held a lot of emotion. The connections between relationships was deep. I really enjoyed the themes of friendship and loyalty in this book. I have no idea where the next book is going to take us but I've bucked up for the ride.

Blog Tour, Giveaway & Review~ Where Dead Bodies Lie (The Body Dowser Series, #1) by Kat Cazanav

For as long as I can remember, I have been told to follow three important rules:
1. Always guard my ability
2. Never share my secret
3. And pretend to be normal.

However, those three little rules don’t make my life easier. I still find dead people and deal with strange visions. Not to mention, an attraction to a boy who doesn’t exist. Whenever we cross path’s he mists away like smoke on a mirror. He drives me crazy, that Kaff Cooper.

As a flock of dead crows fall from the blackened sky, Kaff becomes the only one who can see the truth straight to the dark underbelly of who I actually am.

My hands feel the pull to extract the forsaken, the lost, the forgotten. It comes as naturally as breathing and there is no stopping it.

I really enjoyed this book. It was a nice reminder of why I love YA so much. There are so many different styles of writing and unique stories. For any that follow this blog or know me know that I read hundreds of YA books a year and I can tell you this book surprised me. It was unique. Not only was the story creative and original but it kept me guessing. Just when I thought I knew what was happening something new would be unfolded. It wasn't necessarily a fast action packed read but it was far from predictable. The pace was perfect. It also encompassed what I love most in YA and that is fantasy and romance. Imagine a story full of intrigue with the added bonus of a slow burning romance. It was everything a book should be. It provided an entertained escape to a place I have never been full of characters I have never met and I had a really good time.

Our story starts with Ella who is eight years old and has travelled to Alaska with her dad who is a miner. Ella is not like only little girls. She comes from a line of dowers on her mothers side. She finds things. Some that are lost and some that are hidden. Her power is becoming more powerful but she has no idea how to control it. You see her mother disappeared before she could help her learn.  While searching for gold with her dad an avalanche occurs that takes her dad's life leaving her to go live with her Aunt Lily.

Six years go by with Ell vowing never to dowse again and she lives a pretty normal life. However, shortly before her freshman year her aunt decides to send her off to a fancy boarding school in Alaska. She manages to make some friends and some enemies and in comes Kaff Cooper who is a little of both at first. What she can't help is that as soon as she arrived things start happening and her ability starts to come back full force. Things take a turn for the worse when she collapses in a well and dies. Obviously, this is hard to explain and she ends up getting expelled from the school and shipped back home where she spends the next three years being home-schooled and fighting harder than ever to keep her secret under control.

However, three years later in order to get into college she must have her events from Alaska erased from her record. The only way that is going to happen is a deal struck with the school for her to come and do community service. She's not welcomed back into the school where she has to deal with the drama of teenage girls and of course Kaff. Not to mention a lot of weird things have been happening in the town like birds falling from the sky, people missing, and the dead trying harder than ever to be found by Ell. Add the fact that Kaff is being really odd about her return and full of secrets himself. The novel will follow the events that unfold after Ell's return. I don't want to give any spoilers away but it's such a mix of history, horror, mystery, and swoon.

I really like Ell. Not only is she sassy, strong, and brave but she's also funny and vulnerable and sweet. I love seeing young women (all women) full of strength.  Kaff Cooper, is so swoony! I mean he gave me butterflies. There were some really heartfelt moments that made me squeal. Seriously. I swooned. Not only does he have dark hair and a crooked smile (two things that melt me) but he's also a smart ass with a heart of gold. The chemistry between these two is electric. I found myself smiling each time I read a page with these two. That mixed with the mystery and fantasy of the book really sealed the deal for me.

I really loved this book.

YA Wednesday!!!! Sarah Dessen Reread!

Sarah Dessen is the Queen of contemporary YA!
If you have not read any of her books you are really missing out.  Dessen writes wonderfully poignant stories full of well-written characters and her dialogue writing is by far some of the best in all the literary world.

My friend Thomas once wrote Reading Sarah Dessen is like walking into an air-conditioned store after a hot, humid day in the sun.” Thomas was able to capture all the feelings I have for her books with one sentence.

Dessen has many talents but one of my favourites is her male characters. Eli (Along for the Ride) and Wes (The Truth About Forever) are two of my all time favourite book boyfriends and who I judge all book boyfriends against. At least once a year I find myself picking up my well worn paperbacks of both these novels and settling in for a nostalgic journey. A journey I love to keep coming back to. So for this YA Wednesday I thought I would share these two gems with you all along with a few of my favourite quotes. Sarah Dessen has many other great books as well. As soon as she releases one I grab it up. I love all of her books I just have a special place in my heart for these two. I also really love "How to Deal" with Mandy Moore which is based off two of her novels. Come on early 2000 Mandy Moore. #LOVE

Whether you are new to the world of Dessen or already a Dessenite hit me up in the comments and let's talk YA.

A long, hot summer...

That's what Macy has to look forward to while her boyfriend, Jason, is away at Brain Camp. Days will be spent at a boring job in the library, evenings will be filled with vocabulary drills for the SATs, and spare time will be passed with her mother, the two of them sharing a silent grief at the traumatic loss of Macy's father.

But sometimes, unexpected things can happen—things such as the catering job at Wish, with its fun-loving, chaotic crew. Or her sister's project of renovating the neglected beach house, awakening long-buried memories. Things such as meeting Wes, a boy with a past, a taste for Truth-telling, and an amazing artistic talent, the kind of boy who could turn any girl's world upside down. As Macy ventures out of her shell, she begins to wonder, Is it really better to be safe than sorry?

Seriously, though go to your library. They are going to have Dessen!

It’s been so long since Auden slept at night. Ever since her parents’ divorce—or since the fighting started. Now she has the chance to spend a carefree summer with her dad and his new family in the charming beach town where they live.

A job in a clothes boutique introduces Auden to the world of girls: their talk, their friendship, their crushes. She missed out on all that, too busy being the perfect daughter to her demanding mother. Then she meets Eli, an intriguing loner and a fellow insomniac who becomes her guide to the nocturnal world of the town. Together they embark on parallel quests: for Auden, to experience the carefree teenage life she’s been denied; for Eli, to come to terms with the guilt he feels for the death of a friend.

In her signature pitch-perfect style, Sarah Dessen explores the hearts of two lonely people learning to connect.
