For as long as I can remember, I have been told to follow three important rules:1. Always guard my ability2. Never share my secret3. And pretend to be normal. However, those three little rules don’t make my life easier. I still find dead people and deal with strange visions. Not to mention, an attraction to a boy who doesn’t exist. Whenever we cross path’s he mists away like smoke on a mirror. He drives me crazy, that Kaff Cooper. As a flock of dead crows fall from the blackened sky, Kaff becomes the only one who can see the truth straight to the dark underbelly of who I actually am.My hands feel the pull to extract the forsaken, the lost, the forgotten. It comes as naturally as breathing and there is no stopping it.

I really enjoyed this book. It was a nice reminder of why I love YA so much. There are so many different styles of writing and unique stories. For any that follow this blog or know me know that I read hundreds of YA books a year and I can tell you this book surprised me. It was unique. Not only was the story creative and original but it kept me guessing. Just when I thought I knew what was happening something new would be unfolded. It wasn't necessarily a fast action packed read but it was far from predictable. The pace was perfect. It also encompassed what I love most in YA and that is fantasy and romance. Imagine a story full of intrigue with the added bonus of a slow burning romance. It was everything a book should be. It provided an entertained escape to a place I have never been full of characters I have never met and I had a really good time.
Our story starts with Ella who is eight years old and has travelled to Alaska with her dad who is a miner. Ella is not like only little girls. She comes from a line of dowers on her mothers side. She finds things. Some that are lost and some that are hidden. Her power is becoming more powerful but she has no idea how to control it. You see her mother disappeared before she could help her learn. While searching for gold with her dad an avalanche occurs that takes her dad's life leaving her to go live with her Aunt Lily.
Six years go by with Ell vowing never to dowse again and she lives a pretty normal life. However, shortly before her freshman year her aunt decides to send her off to a fancy boarding school in Alaska. She manages to make some friends and some enemies and in comes Kaff Cooper who is a little of both at first. What she can't help is that as soon as she arrived things start happening and her ability starts to come back full force. Things take a turn for the worse when she collapses in a well and dies. Obviously, this is hard to explain and she ends up getting expelled from the school and shipped back home where she spends the next three years being home-schooled and fighting harder than ever to keep her secret under control.
However, three years later in order to get into college she must have her events from Alaska erased from her record. The only way that is going to happen is a deal struck with the school for her to come and do community service. She's not welcomed back into the school where she has to deal with the drama of teenage girls and of course Kaff. Not to mention a lot of weird things have been happening in the town like birds falling from the sky, people missing, and the dead trying harder than ever to be found by Ell. Add the fact that Kaff is being really odd about her return and full of secrets himself. The novel will follow the events that unfold after Ell's return. I don't want to give any spoilers away but it's such a mix of history, horror, mystery, and swoon.
I really like Ell. Not only is she sassy, strong, and brave but she's also funny and vulnerable and sweet. I love seeing young women (all women) full of strength. Kaff Cooper, is so swoony! I mean he gave me butterflies. There were some really heartfelt moments that made me squeal. Seriously. I swooned. Not only does he have dark hair and a crooked smile (two things that melt me) but he's also a smart ass with a heart of gold. The chemistry between these two is electric. I found myself smiling each time I read a page with these two. That mixed with the mystery and fantasy of the book really sealed the deal for me.
I really loved this book.
