Cover Reveal ~ THE PLAY by Karina Halle

A troubled Scottish rugby player who doesn't play by the rules.
A vivacious man-eater who's given up on love.
When it comes to Lachlan and Kayla, opposites don't just attract - they explode.

Kayla Moore has always been comfortable with her feisty, maneating reputation. At least it was fine until she hit her thirties and saw her best friends Stephanie and Nicola settle down with Linden and Bram McGregor, leaving Kayla to be the odd one out. Tired of being the third wheel with nothing but one-night stands and dead-end dates in San Francisco, Kayla decides to take a vow of celibacy and put men on the backburner.

That is until she lays her eyes on Linden and Bram’s cousin, hot Scot Lachlan McGregor. Lachlan is her sexual fantasy come to life – tall, tatted, and built like a Mack truck. With a steely gaze and successful rugby career back in Edinburgh, he’s the kind of man that makes her want to throw her vow right out the window. But Lachlan’s quiet and intense demeanor makes him a hard man to get to know, let alone get close to.

It isn’t until the two of them are thrown together one long, unforgettable night that Kayla realizes there is so much more to this brooding macho man than what meets the eye. But even with sparks flying between the two, Lachlan can’t stay in America forever. Now, Kayla has to decide whether to uproot her whole life and chance it all on someone she barely knows or risk getting burned once again.
Sometimes love is a game that just needs to be played.

New Release & Giveaway ~ Racing the Sun by Karina Halle

From the New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author of Where Sea Meets Sky comes a new adult novel about a young woman who becomes a nanny in Capri and falls for her charges’ bad-boy brother.

When I’m traveling, I feel like the secret to my life, to myself, to really becoming, is one step ahead. It’s in the next destination, the next town I get lost in, the next stranger I talk to. It’s always next but never here . . .

After six months of backpacking and soul-searching across the world, Amber MacLean is flat broke. There are worse places for a twentysomething to be stuck than the Amalfi Coast, but the only way she can earn enough money for a plane ticket home to California is to teach English to two of the brattiest children she has ever met.

It doesn’t help that the children are under the care of their brooding older brother, ex-motorcycle racer Desiderio Larosa. Darkly handsome and oh-so-mysterious, the young master of the crumbling villa tests Amber’s patience and will at every turn—not to mention her hormones.

When her position turns into a full-time nanny gig, Amber grows dangerously closer to the enigmatic recluse. But can she give up the certainty of home for someone whose closely guarded heart feels a world apart from her own?

When reality starts to fade in a bit, I find myself being walked to the door of my apartment building, my arms draped over both Kayla and Steph. We go up the stairs and now I’m standing in front of my door, wobbling back and forth, trying my hardest to look as sober as possible.
Steph goes to knock on the door but it’s already open. I guess we are being loud, giggling, in the hallway.
Bram looks at the three of us and my God is he a sight for sore eyes.
“We brought her home,” Steph says, motioning with her hand for Bram to get out of the way, “your shift is over.”
“No,” I tell them as they shuffle me inside. “He can stay.”
I know the three of them are exchanging a look over my head.
“I’ll make sure she goes to bed,” Bram explains. “No funny business, I swear.”
“Pinky swear?” Steph says and I turn to see her holding out her pinky to him. “You know I don’t break those.”
Ugh, Steph and her damn pinky swears. She wouldn’t even be married to Linden if it weren’t for one.
But Bram does a pinky swear with her.
“No funny business,” Steph warns him.
“Good thing I’m not funny!” I yell as I flop down on the couch. The room is beginning to spin.
“Nic, that was, like, five minutes ago,” Steph says. She reaches over the couch and pats my head. “Do you want us to undress you because Bram’s not allowed.”
“No one undresses me but me!” I yell, throwing my fist up into the air.
“Have fun with her,” Steph says to Bram. “And remember, she’s untouchable. Don’t make me make your brother punch you in the junk or something.”
Bram makes a scoffing noise. “Last time he tried to do that, I got him back good. You just ask him what happened on January 16th, 2005 and why he’ll never eat pudding again.”
“I mean it,” Steph threatens and I hear her and Kayla leave and the door closing.
I close my eyes too. Drift away for a moment. The spinning has stopped and there’s a beautifully cool breeze wafting over my skin.
“I’m not supposed to touch you,” Bram’s gruff voice says and when I open my eyes, he’s crouched in front of me, a lock of dark hair over his forehead. His face is shadowy in the dark, the only light now being from my bedroom behind him.
“That’s okay,” I mumble into the couch. “You can touch me. I say it’s fine.”
“How about I bring you something to sleep in? Do you have a favorite nightshirt? I always see you in that top that your nipples try and poke right through.”
“No, not the nipple shirt.”
He goes to get up. With a lazy hand, I grip his shirt. “Don’t leave. I’m fine here.”
“I can’t imagine you being comfortable.”
“I’m drunk. Everything is comfortable. Except I wish I had a cheeseburger. I would eat it and use it as a pillow. Or maybe use it as a pillow and then eat it.”
“I see.”
I raise my brow at him. “You just want to go through my underwear.”
“Oh, I’ve already gone through your underwear.”
“Lies.”
“I wore them on my head and danced around your apartment.”
“Did you really?” I ask, totally serious.
“Come on,” he says grabbing my forearms. “If you want to sleep in your clothes, that’s fine. But I’m bringing you to your own bed and taking off your shoes.”
“Can you brush my teeth too? I need clean teeth.” I let him pull me to my feet and I pitch to the left, heading right for the coffee table. But I’m in his arms, his capable arms, and he’s holding me to him.
“You have capable arms.”
“You have an exquisite arse,” he responds and half leads me, half drags me out of the living area and into the bedroom.
“I like the way you say arse,” I say with a giggle, exaggerating his accent. “I like the way you say everything.”
“I’m glad, because I foresee a lot of arse talk in the future.”
“Yeah, yeah.” I try and swat him away. “All talk and no arse pinching.”

Excerpt
There’s nothing but me and Gemma. It feels like we’re the only people left in the world. And it scares me, because she’s all I have to hold onto. I can’t be sure she won’t let go.
There’s no official camping at the lighthouse, so Gemma takes the bus off-roading, much like we did yesterday, and we come to a stop in a small valley in the middle of a field of cows. They all swivel their heads to stare at us with dark, inquisitive eyes. There’s a small house up on the hill but we can barely see it. Horses graze on the hill’s terraced grooves.
Beyond the hills, there’s nothing but ocean. I breathe in deep, feeling strangely nervous and shaky. I don’t think it’s just about being on the edge of nothing, though.
I think it’s that I’m on the edge of something.
We go to bed early, our alarms set for the early morning hour, pre-dawn. Even though the ocean looks to be about a ten-minute walk, I pack a bag with my camera, my phone, my sketchbook and the pastels.
I can’t get enough of her. Our love-making is slow and lazy but necessary. Being inside her feels like being home, it feels like being in love, it feels like everything sweet and beautiful and nice in the world. Every time I come in her I hope I’m making a home for myself, a place where I belong.
The alarm on my phone goes off way too early. In my sleepy stupor I nearly turn it off but Gemma is patting my arm, then punching my arm, telling me to get up. The world around us vibrates with the sound of mooing cows and I wonder how the hell I slept through them.
Even though the days are hot, the mornings by the ocean are cold, and I can barely get on my jeans and hoodie in time. Armed with the pack and flashlights, we jump out of the van. The air snaps at us as if we’re wind-blown flags.
Hundreds of cattle spread out in all directions, bound by the green hills to the south and the lighthouse to the north. I look east, to where the hills part and the sky is a paler shade of dawn. It seems to be growing lighter by the second, and our chances of catching the sunrise are dwindling.
We take off toward the light, cautiously creeping under barbed wire fences and avoiding the epic cow pies dotting the land. The cows, for the most part, seem to be ignoring us, but their piles of shit are like hidden landmines in the dim light. A meandering, narrow stream cuts across us and we have to head up into the terraced hills where wary horses eye us. I get the feeling that we’ve chosen the most difficult route to see the sunrise, and from our vantage point I can’t even see the lighthouse anymore.
Just as the sky seems to grow frighteningly light, we reach the crest of the hill and I nearly collapse, out of breath from the quick, steep hike. A lone filly bolts at the sight of us.
Below us lies an empty beach, laid out like a sheet of velvet. Aside from the occasional hoof print and driftwood, it looks totally undisturbed, like it has been waiting for us all this time. The South Pacific is spread out at the horizon’s feet, a royal blue tinged with saffron edges. The sun is not up yet. We still have time.
We run down the hill and I nearly eat shit, several times, my shoes slipping on the dew-slicked grass, until sand sinks beneath my feet. I grab Gemma’s hand and we run over to the water’s edge just as the sun peeks its glowing crown over the wavering line.
I look at her and smile. We made it. We’re standing on the easternmost point in the easternmost habitable country. We might even be the first people on this whole fucking earth to see this fiery sunrise. Only thousands of miles of rolling water lies between us and the southwest coast of Chile.
And yesterday.

New Release & Group Review ~ Love, in Spanish by Karina Halle

Title: Love, in Spanish
Author: Karina Halle
Published: November 11, 2014
Source: ARC provided for a honest review

The companion to the highly emotional, scandalous and USA Today Bestselling love story - LOVE, IN ENGLISH - is finally here! Love, in Spanish is a Love, in English follow-up novel told from Mateo Casalles' POV. While Love, in Spanish touches on some events that happened in LIE (you know the ones!) it is a whole new story set a year later that continues with Vera and Mateo's "happily ever after." Note: It should be read after Love, in English and it is mostly new material (aka not just rehash of LIE).

*** Synopsis****
"She sat beside me on the bus – and she changed my whole life.”
Successful, wealthy and absurdly handsome – Spanish ex-football player Mateo Casalles seemed like he had it all. A high-society wife, an adorable little girl, and flashy apartments in Madrid and Barcelona only sweetened the deal. But there was more to Mateo than met the eye – a life of uncertainty and regret that colored his black and white world.

That was until Vera Miles came into his life like a shooting star. Tattooed, wild and young, Vera seemed like Mateo’s polar opposite at first. But you can’t choose who you fall in love with and the two lost souls did everything they could to be together, all while suffering the grave consequences.

Now with Mateo divorced and living in Madrid with Vera, there is a whole new set of challenges and setbacks facing the couple and rocking the foundation of their star-crossed relationship.

Unfortunately for them, the brighter the star, the faster they burn.

***Love, in Spanish contains the first two chapters of Where Sea Meets Sky, a full-length Love, in English spinoff starring Vera's brother, Josh Miles, coming March 2015 from Atria Books***

The Addicted Souls Reviews

I loved getting the opportunity to be in Mateo's head. I really love his character and I was foaming at the mouth for the chance to get to know him better. This book had so much heartache and passion. I found myself consumed from the start of the novel to the last page. It's one of those books that you can tell the author just bled into. It's filled with so much passion and emotion. Like all Halle novels the writing is so good. Halle can always tell a great story but she also has a great technical voice and I always appreciate that.

This is from the start of the novel and it just hit a chord with me. It was so powerful and moving I kept replaying the words in my head. It reminded me of discovering your favourite piece of poetry and the obsessive notion to recite it to yourself from then on.

There is no doubt that Halle can write first-class sex and intimacy scenes. Halle nails it! However, I also love the quieter moments when a paragraph like this will just stop me in my tracks and literally give me goosebumps. Halle's range with storylines and with emotions never ceases to astound me.  One of my favourite things about Halle is her understanding and ability to show us that the world is never just black and white, that no person is just one thing. That life is a complicated weave of events and choices that we navigate through. Halle doesn't hid that reality in her writing, her talent comes from shining the light on the dark corners of life. I loved how realistic Love, in Spanish was. I loved that we got to see the good and the bad. The struggles and the victories. That's life and that's love and that's relationships. And like Halle says "Love is always worth it".
Side Note: I totally got butterflies when Josh came on the page!!! JOSSSSHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. Heart heart heart.

I loved Love, in English with every fiber of my being. I fell so hard for Mateo and Vera that they consumed me for weeks after. So when I heard that Karina was writing a book from Mateo's POV, I was over the moon with happiness.

Now this isn't a retelling of LIE in Mateo's POV, it's a continuing of their love story. BOOM. I feel utter happiness about this. So I opened the first page, my expectations on high and I was ready to devour this story.

I want to be honest with you. I was disappointed at first. Mateo's POV wasn't what I expected. In LIE he was this older man who seemed untouchable and knew what he wanted and went after it. So to be inside his head, to hear his insecurities and to see this side of Mateo, it kind of put me off and I didn't like it. I didn't want to keep reading.

NOW. I KNOW. STOP RIGHT THERE. Don't judge me. We are all allowed to NOT like a book. We all read a different book. I see all the 5 star reviews out there for this book and I can see why they would love this book as much as they did. So keep reading this review before you start bashing me and throwing stones.

I fell deep in love with Vera. To see her how Mateo sees her made her even more real to me. She isn't perfect, but young and wounded. To see the love that Mateo felt for her and what he would do for her, it made me sigh and feel all warm inside. To have that kind of love from a man, it made me have hope for them.

My heart broke and I didn't know if it was going to have a HEA. His POV picked up towards the end and the way he fought, the way he stood up and took blame but didn't back down from THE HATERS, he became my Mateo again and he shined as bright as his Estrella. He was the HERO in his own way. I could see the Mateo I fell in love with in LIE.

I let out a huge sigh of relief when I finished this book. I felt the ending was rushed, I wanted a little more story. But I will say that the moment Josh showed up I swooned and he wasn't even in the book that long. I can not wait for his book. There is something about that boy that steals the scene.

Love, in English is still the best contemporary romance book I have ever read, Love, in Spanish is a story that gave me some closure and a big smile on my face a the end.

Oh Mateo, how I love thee!
Our journey has never been easy. The only thing easy in all of this is my love for her”
Her being Vera. The self-professed Villain, though she is not really a villain. She is just a young women in love. And to Mateo, she is his world! We learn in Love, In Spanish that he is willing to sacrifice ANYTHING for her…..except his daughter, Chloe Ann.

I LOVE that Karina Halle can get into the mind of a character, a MAN no less, and show us love, passion, insecurity & sensitivity. I really don’t think that is an easy thing. Mateo is not just any man. He is a proud man, a man use to getting what he wants, but when it comes to Vera & his love for her, nothing is easy.

I LOVE that Karina Halle can tell a realistic love story! I mean let’s face it……a 39 year old man falling in love with a young twenty something tattooed free spirit may not be conventional, but their struggles are. People are quick to judge relationships that are out of the norm and Vera & Mateo feel that deeply in this story. They feel the judgment from all sides and that can put a lot of pressure on couples. They have issues with going out and partying, with not being honest with their feelings, with ex-wives threatening visitation and something that the majority of us have no experience with at all…..the PUBLIC. Through it all, Mateo stands up for his love of Vera and vows to her that nothing can tear them apart, even the possibility of Vera being deported back to Canada.

This book gave me some series feels! I may have shed a tear or two. This story is REAL, HONEST, and HEARTFELT. This story is of a man in love a man willing to risk it all to be with the women he loves. This is a story of a proud yet humble man, a man that any women would be lucky to have, but he is taken. He has his ESTRELLA and he is the luckiest man in the world!

If you are looking for a real love story. A story of sacrifice. A story of two souls fighting for their Happily Ever After then I highly recommend Love, In Spanish (after you read Love, In English of course).
